Aftercare with saniderm
❖Leave your saniderm on for 1-7 days. During this time your tattoo is going to weep & the bandage is going to fill up with body fluids called plasma. This plasma will also mix with excess pigment & create a murky colored fluid that will most likely cover your tattoo. This is completely normal so don't panic! Your bandage is also breathable & water proof so there is no need to worry about it getting wet during showers.
❖NEVER touch your tattoo unless you have clean hands. Germs & bacteria are everywhere & a healing tattoo needs to be properly cared for.
❖When you are ready to remove the saniderm it is best to do this in the shower. Place your tattoo under lukewarm water & slowly remove the bandage carefully. (dead skin may or may not come off with the saniderm so don't be alarmed if this happens. ) Avoid taking off the bandage DRY. Immediately wash your tattoo with antibacterial soap. Do not use any scented washes or soaps. Gently massage the tattoo & build up a good
sud & make sure it's not slimy. NEVER USE A RAG OR LOOFA or anything but your hand to wash the tattoo!!
❖ Rinse the tattoo well & pat dry with a clean paper towel.
❖ Apply a small amount of unscented lotion or a thin layer of aquaphor to the tattoo
❖ Repeat the washing & lotion steps twice a day until your tattoo is healed. If your tattoo appears dry in between washes apply lotion as needed.
❖ DO NOT wrap or re-bandage the tattoo once the saniderm is removed!
❖ If you have a reaction to the saniderm please reach out to your artist. If it comes off before 7 days & exposes the tattoo please refer to “Traditional Healing Aftercare”.
❖ Your tattoo may still peel, flake, or itch. Be sure NOT to pick or scratch the tattoo as that may damage the new skin, & NO anti-itch creams.
❖ NO submerging in water (no bath, pools, hot tubs OR ANY BODIES OF WATER! Showers only!) as well as no sun exposure or tanning beds.
❖ Avoid working out, gyms, or excessive sweating while the tattoo heals.
❖ Try to wear loose breathable clothing during healing & avoid clothing/bedding sticking to it if possible. Extra care & precautions needs to be considered for high movement areas.
❖ If you have any other questions or concerns please contact your artist
Traditional Healing Aftercare
❖Leave the bandage that you received after the tattoo on for one hour. This bandage is there to help keep the air-borne bacteria & other contaminants in the environment from invading your wound.
❖ Before cleaning or touching the tattooed area, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap & warm water. Treat your new tattoo as an open wound.
❖ Carefully remove the bandage. If it sticks, gently wet any applied bandage & gently pull it off so not to damage any scabs or dried matter. Don't force its removal!
❖ After removing the bandage, cleanse the area with mild unscented antibacterial soap & water, then rinse.
DO NOT scrub the tattoo or rub with a washcloth or towel. Wash with your hand & then pat dry with a clean dry towel & let the tattoo dry completely.
❖ Lightly apply a thin layer of a mild medicated ointment such as Aquaphor or ask your artist about a specialty tattoo ointment.
❖ DO NOT re-bandage!!
❖ Make sure the tattoo is kept very clean & apply ointment 3-4 times a day by washing off any old ointment & applying a thin layer of fresh ointment (use only enough to make the skin shiny. Blot once with a paper towel to remove access.) Do not allow your tattoo to become
dry. If a scab does form, do not pick at it, but allow it to heal on its own.
❖ Healing generally takes 14+ days in normal healthy adults. As it heals, expect peeling similar to sunburned skin.
❖ Itching is expected. DO NOT scratch the tattoo!!
❖ DO NOT use sun block (until healed), vaseline or other petroleum jellies.
❖ DO NOT use heavily medicated antibiotic ointment such as neosporin.
❖ DO NOT use iodine, peroxide, or alcohol based products.
